Environmental Benefits of Travelling by Coach

It’s no secret that the transport industry has been a significant contributor to the emission of greenhouse gases. As a society, we must be regimented. It’s important that we consider our carbon footprint when travelling, opting for the viable mode of transport that has the lowest impact on the natural environment.
In this article, we’re going to explain why coach travel is one of the least environmentally harmful modes of transport, and how choosing to travel via coach rather than car can help the UK reach its carbon emission targets for 2050.

CAN TRAVELLING BY COACH REDUCE EMISSIONS?

A study by the Department for Transport/National Atmospheric Emission Inventory found that coach travel has the least harmful environmental impact out of every mode of transportation, excluding cycling and walking.
A single journey from London to Edinburgh in a standard coach results in an average 9.2kg of CO2 emissions per passenger. In contrast, the very same journey would result in the following emissions per passenger:
Plane – 96.4kg
Car – 71kg
Train – 11.9kg
Opting to travel in a coach instead of a car can save 61.8kg of CO2 emissions on a single trip. Think how much that could save on hundreds, or even thousands, of journeys.

WHY DOES A COACH HAVE SUCH A LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT?

One of the primary reasons that travelling by coach creates such a small carbon footprint compared to other vehicles is that it can accommodate a large group of people in one trip. Instead of all using separate cars, with each car releasing its own emissions, coach riders will instead share a single road vehicle. The emissions of one coach compared to the combined emission of multiple cars is much lower.

Technology is another significant factor. The technology in coach engines is always evolving. Engines are constantly optimised to ensure that they continue to reduce their diesel particle emissions and fuel consumption. Here at Wyatt Coaches, our coaches incorporate modern engines that utilise these advancements to minimise their emissions.

HOW COULD INCREASING COACH USAGE IMPACT THE FUTURE?

Even just a small rise in coach use can yield a huge environmental impact. The Confederation of Passenger Transport released figures showing that even just a 10% rise in annual UK coach journeys would translate into over 17 million fewer car journeys.

Not only does 17 million less cars on the road directly reduce carbon emissions, but it also frees up road space significantly, reducing traffic jams. The decongestion will allow average speeds to rise in the remaining road vehicles and consequently enable engines to operate more efficiently, leading to a further reduction in emissions.

Changing from car to coach for viable journeys will help the UK towards its goal of reducing carbon emissions up to 80 percent by 2050. The UK Government have also noted that they hope their leadership in this pledge will help to lead the way for other countries to follow suit. Ultimately, a relatively trivial change, such as changing from car to coach on viable journeys, can have a dramatic knock-on effect that could alter the fate of our planet.

Allenby Coach Hire offers personal coach hire for all occasions. Our coaches feature modern engines that reduce emissions where possible, in addition to comfortable interiors and experienced drivers. Whether you need airport transfers, wedding transport or anything in between, we can help. We operate throughout London and the South East simply give us a call to find out more.

Operational Updates

Dear Allenby Coach Hire

We have received a communication from DfT with the very surprising and disappointing news that the Cabinet Office has advised that ‘private hire coach trips’ in England are currently only permitted for a private group of a single household/support bubble (with the coach driver and tour guide not counting towards the single household/support bubble rule).

Private Hire coach trips

Cabinet Office advises that ‘private hire coach trips’ (in England) are currently only permitted for a private group of a single household/support bubble

The communication from DfT acknowledges that this differs from the previously understood position as set out in the DfT’s Safer Transport guidance for operators, which states that social contact rules preventing passengers from gathering with those outside their household/support bubble“…do not place any capacity constraints on public transport services and private hire vehicles, including organised coach travel” and advises that “Operators should continue to provide transport services that can accommodate separate multiple groups which conform to the requirements of the relevant social contact rules.”

Based on the new Cabinet Office guidance, which the Department says set the parameters for coach travel, private hire coach trips/tours carrying multiple household groups will only be permitted from Stage 3 of the Roadmap, currently scheduled for 17 May. It says that such trips carrying multiple household groups will not be permitted until then. DfT says that it will update the Safer Transport Guidance to clarify the matter shortly.

CPT officers are very aware that this decision will have a serious impact on those restarting excursions and private hire trips as part of the Government Roadmap. We very much feel that this guidance is unfair and non-sensical, and have made this clear to the Department. We have stressed our belief that COVID-secure coach trips are in reality as safe or in some cases safer than the alternative of passengers using public transport to reach their trip destination. Our Chief Executive, Graham Vidler has this afternoon met with the Minister, Baroness Vere and set out our position very clearly. The Minister has agreed to review the matter and see what can be done. We shall also be writing to the Cabinet Office as a matter of urgency.

Today CPT is publishing its coach strategy that sets out the value of the coach industry to wider society.  The strategy also includes the policies we need to see from governments across the UK to help ensure that coach operators can fully deliver these vitally important roles, including support to help restart following the pandemic.

Mandatory wearing of face coverings on public transport in England

Ahead of the official guidance being published, Department for Transport has provided CPT with the following information to help bus and coach operators in England prepare for the mandatory wearing of face coverings by public transport users from Monday 15 June.

**Please note that this is not official guidance and some of the information contained within this update may be subject to change**

Who will have to wear face-coverings?

Public transport users required to wear a face-covering if they can
  • All passengers on buses, coaches*, domestic and international trains, trams, passenger ships/vessels and hovercraft, aircraft, and cable cars in England.
  • DfT is working with the Devolved and Administrations and operators to test options on face coverings for cross-border and international services.
  • The regulation will not apply to those in other spaces such as stations, seaports or airports, but operators may choose to ask their passengers to wear a covering in transport hubs where appropriate.
  • The regulation will only apply to passengers, it will not apply to the workforce. The wearing of any protective clothing or PPE by the workforce is a matter for the operators to address following a risk assessment as part of their health and safety responsibilities. DfT will work with operators and other interested parties to ensure that face coverings are available to their staff.

Who is exempt?

Passengers with the following health and non-visible conditions are exempt
  • Following an Equalities Impact Assessment, exemptions will apply to those with:
  1. Breathing difficulties and other respiratory conditions.
  2. Conditions affecting their dexterity, meaning they are not able to put on a face covering.
  3. Mental health conditions such as anxiety or panic disorders.
  4. Other non-visible disabilities such as autism.
  5. Cognitive impairments, including dementia, who may not understand or remember the need to wear a face covering.
  6. Visual impairments, with a restricted field of vision, particularly if any residual vision is at the lower edge of the normal field of view.
  7. Impairments which would make it difficult to put on or take off a face-covering safely, accurately, consistently or without pain.
  • DfT also expects there to be reasonable judgement to ensure people can respond appropriately to avoid the risk of harm to themselves or others, and seek emergency medical assistance if required.
  • The exemptions also apply to those who rely on lip-reading. This would include carers who are travelling with someone for whom a face covering will inhibit communication.
  • You will also be able to remove your face covering for eating/drinking if necessary and taking essential medication.
  • The regulation will not apply to children under 11 or children on dedicated school transport services.
  • DfT expects everyone to wear a face-covering if they can. The above list of exemptions is not exhaustive and would extend to someone who has a justifiable reason for not wearing one on the grounds of health or disability not outlined above.

What about compliance?

Operators asked to remind passengers of the rules and regulations

  • DfT hope that the travelling public will be happy to wear face coverings to help protect others, and therefore hope that there will be high levels of compliance with this new policy, reducing the need for enforcement.
  • Operators have discretion over how their staff can enforce this regulation. DfT asks operators to remind passengers of the rules and deny access to services, or remove passengers from services, if they continue to fail to comply without legitimate exemption. The regulation will include specific powers for operators to do this.
  • Where the above steps fail, the police and potentially other bodies will be provided with the power to fine a passenger if they continue to refuse to comply and/or become anti-social. The exact fine level will be in line with the existing Coronavirus restrictions.
  • DfT is working through whether transport operators and unions would be content for their staff to have fining powers, or if it will only be the police with those powers. DfT welcomes views on this.

What is a face covering?

Passengers urged to make or buy their own face covering
  • A face covering is a cloth covering that covers the wearer’s nose and mouth which can be made at home. You can find out how to make one here.
  • You should not use medical grade PPE as this needs to be reserved for health and care workers, people should make or buy their own. However, someone wearing PPE would be compliant with the regulation.

BBC Children In Need: 2019 Got It Covered

In the summer of 2019, ten of Britain’s most critically acclaimed actors came together to take on their toughest role ever: to record an album for the wonderful @bbcchildreninneed.

We were delighted to help transport to the ‘Half-Moon Helpers’ to the world-famous Abbey Road Studios to help complete the recording process!!

“In the summer of 2019, ten of Britain’s most critically acclaimed actors came together to take on their toughest role ever: to record an album for BBC Children In Need.

This 90-minute film charts the making of the album, Got It Covered. Its stellar cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Shaun Dooley, Luke Evans, Suranne Jones, Adrian Lester, Himesh Patel, David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker. With just 12 weeks to record the album, each actor must choose a song that has special meaning for them and must make their cover version their own.

Cameras follow the actors behind the scenes as they cram rehearsals into their busy schedules. The illustrious company get to grips with being out of their comfort zone and we see the real them unfold. To help guide our actors on their musical journey are veteran producers Guy Chambers and Jonathan Quarmby and vocal coach Mark De–Lisser. There are also a few surprises provided by Will Champion and Jonny Buckland from Coldplay.

The actors also visit some charity projects that Children in Need supports in order to help raise funds and awareness.”

DVSA Earned Recognition Scheme

DVSA Earned Recognition

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) earned recognition scheme has been created to offer a new way to prove companies meet the required driver and vehicle standards.

By joining this scheme we have proven that we are:

  • Continuously monitoring our own compliance
  • Using DVSA-validated IT systems
  • Compliant with vehicle and road safety standards

Voluntary Scheme

The scheme is an initiative from the DVSA that has allowed us to opt to achieve Earned Recognition status by sharing tachograph and maintenance data with them.

It’s a voluntary scheme that’s designed to work for operators of all sizes and we are very proud to have joined just 7% of all transport operations (PSV or Haulage) who are allowed to claim this.

What Does This Mean For You?

As the entire Allenby Coach Hire team continues to strive for excellence, this exclusive recognition offers another insight into the high level of service that our customers can expect to achieve.

Accreditation by the DVSA means that our fleet of vehicles and drivers will be at their optimal condition for you. Tips on Finding a Reliable Coach Company

Whether you’re planning school trips, sporting events for the year, business offsites – or simply booking a trip with friends – finding a reliable and reputable coach hire company is important.

When choosing a coach operator, there are many elements to consider such as safety and punctuality, not to mention affordability. Additionally, more often than not, coaches are hired for celebrations or memory-forming moments such as weddings, theatre trips or sports events, which means timing and good communication is crucial. Allenby News July 2017

John Dewberry

Welcome to the Summer edition of our quarterly newsletter.

June and July are always hectic months for Allenby – so this is just a sample of what we’ve been up to.

I hope you find something of interest below – I look forward to hearing from you if you think we can help, but meantime, if you’re off on holiday soon, have a great break.

Our reviews

Thank you to all those who continue to contribute to our reviews. In the last 3 months we’ve notched up another 25 reviews and maintained our score of 4.89 out of 5. Here’s just a few comments from recent guests:

I was on the recent trip with the Croydon Parkinson’s Group to Bewl Water, and Andy our driver was very helpful, got us there in good time, and brought us back a different route through the countryside and villages which we enjoyed. The coach was comfortable as well.

From when I made the booking with the help of both Linda and John, I knew we were in safe hands. Thank you so much for your efficiency and patience and great driving!

Geoff was considerate and helpful and our parish women’s group would recommended him to anyone.

The coach was clean and comfortable and arrived punctually. Bernard, the driver, was very amicable and drove well.

If you hear of anyone who might need help, we’d be grateful of a mention 🙂

Thank you

Knights Garden Centre to the Hampton Court Flower Show
Warlingham Probus to Chatham Dockyard

Finally, we were delighted to be asked to provide transport for the Antiques Roadshow at Nymans Gardens

The next 3 months should be equally action packed – we look forward to updating you next time.

BeefeatersBehind the scenes

OK – so let’s talk about Euro 6 emissions!

Not the most riveting of subjects I know. But actually this is a really rather important piece of legislation.

It’s been 25 years since the ‘Euro 1′ standard required the fitting of catalytic converters to petrol cars, reducing the levels of carbon monoxide being released into the environment.

Euro 6 is the latest in this series of standards and seeks to reduce pollutants such as hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter as well as carbon monoxide.

Needless to say, although these new standards have been expected for a while, it will mean major changes for anyone running their business using on-road vehicles. The mayor of London has put in place legislation that will prevent non-Euro 6 vehicles from entering the congestion zone by 2019. So before too long companies that don’t make changes to their fleet won’t be able to offer trips into London!

Because of our policy of replacing all our vehicles every 3 years, we’ve been choosing to buy Euro 6 vehicles and already more than half of our fleet is compliant with the new Euro 6 emissions legislation. We will be fully compliant by the time the legislation is introduced.

Yes – you can rely on Allenby 🙂

Euro 6 Emissions Legislation and the Future for Coach Hire

It has been 25 years since the ‘Euro 1′ standard required the fitting of catalytic converters to petrol cars, reducing the levels of carbon monoxide being released into the environment. Euro 6 is the latest in this series of standards and seeks to reduce pollutants such as hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter as well as carbon monoxide.

We spoke to John Dewberry, Managing Director of Allenby Coach Hire, to find out what he thinks of this legislation and how it affects the coach hire industry as a whole.

“We’ve known this has been coming for the last 5 years” explains John. “Because of our policy of replacing all our vehicles every 3 years, we have been choosing to buy Euro 6 vehicles and now more than half of our fleet is compliant with the new Euro 6 emissions legislation.”

Brexit and the May election

John believes that neither Brexit nor the upcoming May election will affect or delay these changes in emissions standards. “If vehicle manufacturers want to sell their products in Europe, or if coach companies want to drive in Europe, they will need to comply with Euro 6.

Also, the mayor of London has put into place legislation that will prevent non-Euro 6 vehicles from entering the congestion zone by 2019. So one way or another, if you run a coach hire company, you will eventually need to replace your fleet.”

John Dewberry

Impacts on the coach hire industry

Needless to say, although these new standards have been expected for a while, it will mean major changes for anyone running their business using on-road vehicles. So what impacts will these changes will have on Allenby Coach Hire’s competitors?

“Some coach companies, if they don’t renew their vehicles frequently, will find it impossible to fund the replacement of their fleet. If the business owner is nearing retirement age, perhaps they’ll decide to retire early. Or perhaps they’ll decide not to offer any trips into London” John suggests.

“We’ve had this type of change before though, with Euro 5 and previous iterations, so in general, people will just get on with it” he adds.

The future of coach hire and emissions standards

In John’s opinion, this will be the last round of standards for combustion engine vehicles. “It’s likely that the next wave of changes will require all new vehicles to be electric” states John simply. “The coaches that we’ll buy next April, for instance, will be Euro 6 compliant. But they’ll probably be electric the following year”.

Overall John is positive about such changes and improving the air quality for all. “I think it is necessary to reduce the emissions that are coming out of vehicles on the road. Nobody wants their town full of dirty lorries and cars polluting the air. But it’s a very complex issue” says John.

“Electric cars may produce next to no particulates to get discharged into the air, but how is that electricity being generated? And what is the carbon footprint of making the electrical cars and vans in the first place? We need to have a view on the bigger picture of such environmental initiatives” he points out.

An alternative solution to electric vehicles is already being trialled in London in 2017 – the hydrogen-powered, zero-emission buses made by Wrightbus in Northern Ireland. The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has committed to buying about 300 zero emission buses by 2020 for use in the capital.

“This technology is the ideal solution, the only byproduct of these machines is water, but they’re too expensive at the moment to be a feasible solution for the vast majority of businesses” John concludes.

One thing is certain, with his finger on the pulse of the future of transportation, John Dewberry will make sure Allenby Coach Hire stays forward-thinking and up to date will all regulations.

Allenby News January 2017

Welcome to the first 2017 edition of our new quarterly newsletter spotlighting just a few of the things we’re been doing over the last 3 months.

As you may have read in the press, we recently decided that it was unacceptable that the good people of Oxted should be unable to get to work because of the rail strikes. So we laid on 3 minibuses in the morning and 3 in the evening to help them out.

And when Southern rail decided they should lay on a replacement bus service, many people still decided to use our minibuses. You can read more about it here Daily Mail and also see a recent news clip here on ITV.

I’d like to thank everyone for their very kind feedback – and take this rather belated opportunity to wish you a happy new year!

Very best wishes
John Dewberry

Our reviews

We are very proud of our reviews. Thank you to all those who have contributed.

Here’s our latest ‘scores on the doors’:

Allenby Coach Hire reviews5 star: 104 reviews
4 star: 8 reviews
2 star: 2 reviews

Here’s what Mark Wright had to say recently:

“Excellent service during the recent southern strike. Its a shame you don’t advertise more widely, I only heard about this via word of mouth”.

It seems that even though Allenby have been in the area for many years, we’re still a bit of an ‘unknown’. So please, if you hear of anyone who might need transport, we’d be grateful of a mention 🙂

Thank you.

On the road

In the last 3 months we’ve taken some 51 groups on a wide range of visits. Here’s just a few highlights:

We took the good folk of Yew Tree Court Sanderstead to Le Personne Caterham (pictured)
HayesAra spent a fun day at the Portsmouth Christmas Market
St Marys Church enjoyed a trip to Oxford for their annual Carol Concert

Limpsfield Riding Club galloped to the Horse of the year show at Olympia
Parks School of Dancing sashayed to Saddlers Wells

…and we took several companies out for their annual ‘bash’

If you’re interested in hiring us to take your club on an excursion, please contact us (details below)

Our work with schools

Hockey

In the last quarter we’ve supported a number of local schools with their ‘usual’ day to day needs, but we’d particularly like to mention:

Sevenoaks school’s hockey match in Norwich
Woldingham’s students as we helped them to get to school during the rail strike
Sevenoaks school’s boarders as they did their Christmas Shopping before they returned home
Downe School on their trip to see Peter Pan at the Churchill Theatre (O no you didn’t – O yes we did)

Behind the scenes

Aeroplanes

Allenby Coach Hire is a team – and it’s a team that works together to consistently deliver a reliable, presentable and friendly service.

This quarter, I’d like to pay tribute to the team using the words of just a few of our happy customers:

“From the first ‘phone call to Linda, Allenby’s staff were very courteous and efficient. The coach was of a very high standard and Bernard, the driver, was very helpful and friendly to all our guests”

“The booking was efficiently handled. The trip itself (to Glyndebourne) was a great success: the driver, Barry, was very considerate to the group (eg enquiring whether anyone needed a wc stop en-route). A good driver and excellent timings throughout”

“First class service from driver Geoff. On time at all points, very reliable”

“From start to finish I can’t fault Allenby Coach Hire. Very amenable, excellent communication and on the day, our coach driver, Andy, was very polite and helpful. All round, a great Company to work with”

and finally…

“It is very easy to book coaches with Allenby. All the team are so helpful and all the drivers are very friendly”

Take a bow, all pilots and ground crew

If you think we might be able to help you (or a friend) with a future event, please do call – and experience the Allenby team yourself.

Southern Rail Replacement Service

January Southern Rail Strikes – Coach Service from Oxted to Sevenoaks

Here’s the latest information about Allenby Coach Hire’s commuter run to Sevenoaks.

We have been hired by Southern to provide a coach service from 06.08 to 20.55 with other coach companies also being hired in. This service will be free of charge as far as we know.

We are also being approached by customers who used us during the last disruption saying that they would still prefer to use us, using the system we had in place last time. This would involve a payment of £10.00 per trip.

We are happy to offer this but obviously we run the risk of people using the free service and us not being required.

We are sending this post out to gauge whether there is enough of a demand for our pre-booked service to make it worthwhile to run.

Would you please indicate your preference by e-mail to enquiries@allenbycoachhire.co.uk or Facebook. Then depending on the demand we will make a decision on Friday afternoon.

Just to remind everybody. Our coach would run:

Oxted – Sevenoaks Sevenoaks – Oxted
06:00 18.00
07:00 19.00
08:00 20.00

The cost would be £10.00 each way, collected at the start of each journey. You would need to pre-book your seat as this is a legal requirement.
