The house is the former family home and place of inspiration for Sir Winston Churchill and his family between 1922 and 1965, when upon Sir Winston Churchill’s death it was presented to the National Trust. Chartwell remains today much as it did when he lived here. The house has been preserved as it would have looked, rooms are carefully decorated with memorabilia and gifts, the original furniture and books, as well as honours and medals that Churchill received. The house is a Grade I listed property for the historical reasons associated with it and the gardens are listed as Grade II.
